Honey was usually extracted from traditional hives by pressing or patting, crushing the alveoli made of wax. Because of this harvesting method, straw hives provided more wax but less honey than a modern hive. Later, Father Emile Warre invented a popular hive model with fixed or mobile frames, the hive known as Warre.
However, because bees are threatened and protected by law in many countries, these traditional methods are little used. In some countries, the law requires the beekeeper to ensure the health of the colonies, and thus to have access to the hive to detect diseases and parasites, without destruction of the alveoli, and often of the colony.
